How to restore image preview in windows file explorer

• open up an explorer/My Computer window
• go to Tools ->Folder Options
• select the File Types tab
• find the extension you want to fix (JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP)
• select the extension; if the button on the bottom right says "Restore" click it to make it change to "Advanced" and click "Advanced", if it already says "Advanced" just click it and keep going
• select the "Preview" option and click "Edit"
• to restore Preview to its original form the dialog should look as follows:
  • Action: Preview
  • Application used...: rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
  • Use DDE: Checked
  • Application: shimgvw
  • DDE Application Not...: (this one's empty)
  • Topic: System
• hit "OK"
• with "Preview" stil selected click "Set Default"
• hit "OK"/"Apply" until all dialogs are closed
